This is a rare 4-volume work from 1781 "Southern Discovery by a Flying Man, or The French Dedalus" by the very prolific author and printmaker, Nicolas-Edmé Restif de la Bretonne (1734-1806). He was something of an eccentric or even neurotic character who recorded his own libertine life in many of his works. He produced a bewildering multitude of books, amounting to something like two hundred volumes, on almost every conceivable subject.
Rétif de la Bretonne undoubtedly holds a remarkable place in French literature. He was inordinately vain, of extremely relaxed morals, and perhaps not entirely sane. His books were written with haste, and their licence of subject and language renders them "quite unfit for general perusal", according to the Britannica redactors. (Wikipedia.org)
