Walter Crane was one of the most popular Victorian illustrators of children's books.
He believed in designing books - not simply providing pictures for them. He was concerned with borders and typography as with illustrations themselves. Crane felt that the whole should be harmonious, a marriage of words and images.
To a slightly lesser degree he is known for his textile and wallpaper designs, and his ceramic design work. He produced a number of high quality ceramic goods like pots, ceramic tiles and vases for Wedgwood, Pilkington's and Maw & Co.
