Moonlight in VernazzaHe was born in 1962 in China at the times of the Cultural Revolution. At age five he worked at a construction site delivering big baskets of gravel . He was lucky enough to survive an accident there.
At age eleven Cao Yong started drawing and had to skip meals and to pawn clothes to buy art supplies. At 16 he took the exam for the Art Universities scoring the highest marks, but was rejected because of his family's previously distinguished background. A year later he was admitted to Henan University and received his BFA in 1983.

Afternoon TeaCao Yong taught at Tibet University after graduation. While exploring and studying cave paintings of Tibet he had lived alone in mountains for about a year. Remarkable series of paintings and his first one-man show in Beijing (1989) were the result of that experience. His huge success alarmed the Chinese authorities -- police arrested him and burnt 7 of his paintings. He managed to escape to Japan with his fiancée Aya Goda.
