The American landscape artist was born in Philadelphia, into a family of a successful businessman. He attended a private school as every man in his family. He started studying painting with German landscape painter Paul Weber. In 1854 he had his first exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, which was followed by the exhibitions in Boston and New York.
Lewis became a prolific artist whose romantic landscapes influenced by Frederic Edwin Church and Albert Bierstadt were avidly collected by Philadelphia patrons. By 1880s he made a fortune.
Lewis never had a family of his own and led a convenient existence at his parents house. Sometime after 50 years old he bought a townhouse where he accumulated a huge collection of fine and decorative arts. He devoted 30 years of his life to his passion.
Later in his life Lewis lost interest in oil painting and he painted mostly watercolors representing the popular resorts Cape May and Atlantic City.
