Nikolaos Gyzis (1842-1901). Greek Painter
Nikolaos Gyzis is one of Greece's most important 19th-century painters. He is the major representative of the "Munich School", the 19th-century Greek art movement.
His family settled in Athens in 1850 and soon he started studying at the Athens School of Fine Arts.
He continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, after winning a scholarship. There he settled for the rest of his life. Very soon he became a leading figure among Greek artists in Munich and since 1886 he was a professor at the Fine Arts Academy there.
