Leon Dabo (1865 –1960)

Leon Dabo was an American tonalist landscape painter, muralist, writer and lecturer, born in France and best known for his paintings of New York and the Hudson Valley. He was a student of John La Farge, Puvis de Chavannes, and James McNeil Whistler.
His oil paintings were known for the feeling of spaciousness, they were "a distinct contribution to be associated with the flower harmonies of Odilon Redon and of Fantin-Latour." ("New York Times")
Dabo was considered a master of his art, he lectured on Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at Columbia University in the 1920s.
In 1944 Dabo was elected full Academician of The National Academy of Design. He painted until his ninetieth year, and in 1960 died in New York City. His brother, Scott Dabo, was also a noted painter.
