Edmond François Aman-Jean (1858 – 1936) was a French Symbolist painter. His parents died when he was 10 y.o. His uncle from Paris took him in.
He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and he later became an important teacher in his own right. His students were Theodor Pallady, Nicolae Tonitza and Charles Sydney Hopkinson. After receiving a stipend in 1885, Aman-Jean traveled to Italy with them where he discovered the Primitives and Raphael.
The artist established his reputation mostly for his women portraits. His pictures of women painted during his symbolist period represented the "femme fatale" type of fin de siècle that Aman-Jean saw in his immediate surroundings during his later years.
Aman-Jean was also worked on murals in public and official buildings, including the Sorbonne; he worked in lithography and printmaking as well.
