Sarah Bernhardt came on stage in his jewelry, the perfumer Francois Coty poured the world's first chypre fragrance in a bottle of his work, "Normandy" and "Orient Express" were decorated with his glass panels. At the age of 24 Rene Lalique was a legend of his era. At thirty-seven years Rene Lalique was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour. Lalique's jewelry were bought by museums, collectors and Emprerors - wholesale, directly from the exhibitions.
In the beginning of his career some jewelry houses feared that Lalique jewelry could deter high-society clientele. His butterflies, dragonflies, ears seemed too bohemian. Aristocracy demanded pompous ornaments with large stones. Lalique rejected this aesthetics. He offered bold forms and unusual materials as pearls and crystal. It was not appropriate at the times. No surprise that bohemian public - actresses and dancers appreciated Lalique's artwork before others. His collaboration with the actress Sarah Bernhardt - the true star of his time - was a very important episode in his career. He also created personal jewelry for her, among which were the most unusual hair ornaments and combs in a Japanese style.

In 1900 at the World Exhibition in Paris, he was awarded the Grand Prix and became a sensation.
By the end of 1900, Rene Lalique was recognized as the premiere jeweler of his day, and as a decorative artist of the highest order by both the public and his contemporaries.
