Colin Campbell Cooper (1856-1937) American Impressionist Painter
Colin C. Cooper (b. in Philadelphia, PA) studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and at Académie Julian in Paris. Upon his return to Philadelphia, the artist taught watercolor classes at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry
Cooper married well-known artist Emma Lampert in 1897; the couple traveled to Germany, Italy, India and Burma. They were the first class passengers on the Cunard liner Carpathia in April 1912, en route from New York to Gibraltar, when it picked up the survivors of the RMS Titanic.
In 1898 Cooper with his wife moved to New York. There he started working on his famous skyscraper paintings.
After his wife Emma died of tuberculosis in 1920, the painter moved to Santa Barbara and became dean of the School of Painting at the Santa Barbara Community School of Arts. In 1927 Cooper married his second wife, Marie Frehsee.
