Sarah Afonso (1899-1983) Portuguese Artist
Sarah Afonso was born in Lisbon. When she was 5 years old, her family moved to Viana do Castelo. Afonso returned to Lisbon to study painting at the Lisbon School of Fine Art. Sarah frequented and kept company with intellectuals at A Brasileira cafe. It was quite unconventional for a woman to associate with the bohemian art world. In 1934 Afonso married Almada Negreiros, also a painter, and gave up her painting in favour of a domestic life, interior decoration, craftwork and gardening. She worked on embroideries depicting shrines and weddings.
Afonso ended her work as an oil painter in 1948. After the death of her husband in 1970, Sarah started illustrating books for children.
