Eugeniusz Zak was born to a family of Polish Jews in Minsk, Belaurus. His family moved to Warsaw when he was a boy. In 1902 Zak went to Paris to study at at the École des Beaux-Arts and later at Académie Colarossi. The artist exhibited at the Autumn Salon and later taught at the Académie La Palette.
The artist rapidly became famous. He was connected with important personalities of Parisian cultural life, including the critics Adolf Basler and André Salmon. Zak worked mainly in France, although he spent time in Poland and Germany.
He was an outstanding exponent of Neo-Classicism and enjoyed links to the Warsaw-based RYTM / RHYTHM group (founded in 1922) as well as the École de Paris.
