Jacques Emile Blanche (1861 – 1942) was born in Paris into the family of a rich Parisian psychiatrist. His father treated wealthy and famous people of the time, artists and writers.
Jacques-Emile received an excellent cosmopolitan education, and was raised in Passy, the Parisian area in the XVI arrondissement, known for the city's wealthiest residents.
Blanche received some training in painting from Henri Gervex, yet he can be considered as a self-taught artist.

During the 1870 war with Prussia, the young boy was sent to the safe London, the city where he would spend more time than in Paris. His fascination for the English way of life was developed to some an eccentric and snobbish degree, when "he dressed in tweed and Savile Row suits, made-to-measure shoes from Lobb's and hats from Locke's. He thought his upper-class English accent was authentic but he was often mimicked. One imitation made Lord Rosebery, the Liberal prime minister, laugh until he cried." (PAUL WEBSTER)
"He was constantly invited by English friends to their country houses and he was ravished by the atmosphere - the liveried butlers and valets, interminable meals, Sunday church, billiards, party games, the whisky and the cigars." (Jane Roberts)

During holidays the artist also spent much time in Dieppe which was a popular resort among thousands Britons during Victorian and Edwardian times, where he met the artist Walter Sickert and the Irish writer George Moore.
Enjoying a successful career as a painter, especially in portrature, Blanche wrote 30 books and hundreds of articles on painting and literature (Portraits of a Lifetime; More Portraits of a Lifetime, published in English), and wasn't sure himself if he had to be categorised as a writer or a painter. The artist was living well off his own fortune, he didn't have a need to position himself seriously as a painter.
The sitters for his portraits were atists, writers, musicians - Beardsley, Proust, Symons, Joyce, Hardy, Sickert, Gide, as well as the representatives of the upper-class from both sides of the Channel.
Before his death at the age of 71, Blanche donated many of his paintings to British and London galleries, a number of his oeuvre stayed in France.
