Maxime Maufra, born in Nantes, started painting at 18. In late 1886, he exhibited his artworks at the Paris Salon. He settled in Brittany where he met Gauguin and Serusier. Maufra had his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1894, at Le Barc de Toutteville.

Maufra admired Sisley and Pissarro and sometimes quoted their pointillist-like technique although his technique is clearly more aggressive and bold. His works also feature a pronounced liking for synthesis, strong color, and powerful drawing, traits reminiscent of Pont Aven artists.

His works are bold and colourful, and I am glad you noted he was indeed invited to exhibit his art at the critically important Paris Salon. In one or two of the works, I can even detect a touch of the van Gogh.
ReplyDeleteSo I wonder why the name Maufra isn't better known. I looked up my trusty art history reference by Collins and could not find his name.
Indeed, I could find his name in art journals only as a mention that his work had been exhibited along with the works of Lebasque, Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis..
